To different people, Pastor Joel Osteen is a lot of different things. What is common knowledge is the fact that he is the pastor of America's largest and fastest growing church. There is no debate about that. The task of pastoring the church was thrust upon him by the untimely demise of his father, the late Pastor John Osteen. Since he assumed charge, much has been written about him, his ability, his knowledge of the Bible and even his commitment. Whatever the case may be, the megachurch he is pastoring has thrived under him and he has written some of the bestsellers as far as Christian books are concerned.
I have read quite a few of his books and his latest, Break Out!: 5 Keys to Go Beyond Your Barriers and Live an Extraordinary Life, is no different from his earlier books. This is not a statement to dilute the purpose and intention of Joel Osteen in writing this particular book.
What is at the core of all his writings, as far as I can assume, is to inspire, motivate, and encourage people. To give hope, meaning and a reason to continue the walk along the rugged road of life, I believe, is Joel's purpose. I have never been given the impression that he is writing a theological book or some hard reading materials. He has never made a theological statement through his writings, and if he thinks he has done that, it is something like a teenager who believes that his father does not know anything.
