Hi Fellow Guitar Players. I have been playing guitar since 1964. I was basically a Garage Musician. Was in a band and had a "Hit" in the 60's. Playing my guitar was cut short for a few years, as I served my country in the US Army. I am an active musician. O.K......Let's get to the point. I have purchased many DVD's, books, have had a few guitar lessons, where they the teacher used tabs, and taught you more licks. It was nice to learn licks, follow the tabs books, and play like Clapton, SRV, Michael Hedges, and on, and, on. All of the above were NOT getting me to the place where I wanted to be. I want to be versatile, and have the ability to play in any style of music from jazz, to rock, to polkas. I also have a desire to read music. The skill of playing in different venues lies in the scales. I have purchased many books and DVD's, teaching scales and other approaches. They were so monotonous, and boring that you would put them on the shelf, along with your other "lost cause" items. This can lead you to become discouraged, and eventually cause you to consider giving up and discontinue playing. Then I came across this book (with CD). If you want to move into the area where you can play more than just the blues, and some fancy licks, this is the BEST product I have found. It is well written, and takes you through the learning process one step at a time. They pace it very well, from step 1 on through. I am a slow learner. There are books and DVD's out there. Some of them are just over my head. I am an intermediate player. They assume that you know some theories, and have knowledge, so when you get into the product, you are lost, you have already spent $40 more or less, and wind up putting it on the shelf, or in a box, with your other "stuff.
Great book that has helped me put my knowledge of scales to more practical use. For that reason alone the book is worthy of 5 stars. It has been stated in other reviews that the book helped them learn scales. Maybe that's true- but I would NOT have been ready for this book without the scale knowledge and understanding I had going in. But just because I can play a lot of scales in all positions doesn't mean that I can use them to make music, and that's the real value of the book. The constant reinforcement of how each scale pattern relates to chord shapes up and down the neck is something I never thought too much about or read in other books. It's helped me to pinpoint a few areas where I need to make more sense of the scale patterns that I "know" and it's given me fresh ideas for how to practice those scales.
Intangible point perhaps, but there have been a few "ah hah" moments that came to me hours or days after finishing the lessons. Those moments- however rare- are the ones that keep me interested and keep me on my journey to learn more about guitar every day.
The book comes with a CD, but I've never used it or felt I needed to. But for someone starting chapter 1 who doesn't know the familiar feel and sound of the scales it will probably help. I've found that most of the principles in the book are reinforced over and over, front to back and back to front and in different scale patterns and progressions. It's also worth saying that I don't find the book to be redundant or sit and drive points uselessly into the ground with too much details. The text is aimed at intermediate players- unlike other books I've bought that just have you playing 16 different crappy single-line scale patterns copied from popular songs and styles.
