I have a very hard time rating this book. I really like JJ Virgin, she is one of the luminaries, up there with Dave Asprey at BulletProof Executive. However, I don't think she can appeal to the mainstream. For instance, I figured out one of the recipes in this book, if you bought everything fresh, organic, wild caught, etc.. at Whole Foods - for the Seafood Soup - with Halibut wild caught and wild sourced shrimp/prawns - the dinner would cost about $60 for a a family of four that eats well (good portions - not 1/2 cup sized portions).
My point is that many of the recipes are just cost prohibitive. And I KNOW I KNOW you are going to tell me, what cost is your health worth to you? I agree - but there HAS to be some type of moderation -I can not spend $500 a week sourcing grass fed lamb, bison, beef and wild caught halibut, scallops etc. For the regular family/person - this costs too much. And I am aware of the study that shows that eating healthier with organic choices only adds $2 a day - well, trust me - NOT the JJ VIRGIN diet - lol - you're adding about $75 a day eating like this.
Now, having kvetched about the sheer costs of things - JJ VIRGIN looks friggin amazing - so this stuff works! I don't ever argue the method. There is a ton of work in this lifestyle - and I know - we did the raw thing for a while - so trust me when I say that food becomes the center of your universe.
Honestly, I just don't want to make shopping, prepping and food that much of a priority.
There are terrible food allergies out there and if you suspect you have one - go at this - it is awesome. The science behind this program as far as I can tell is centered loosely around a ketogenic diet (NOT the one Dr. Atkins used in the 60's - too much protein).
I lost 10 pounds my first month on the JJ Virgin Diet, so I was super excited to see a cookbook by the same author. Her newest book is an added value to the program. There are several things I like about this book, such as:
*Swap Lists. You'll find a list of healthy food items you can swap for unhealthy foods. For example, swap pasta for spaghetti squash or wheat flour for almond or coconut flour. There are more than 30 "swap foods" on this handy list.
* Healing foods. You'll find a detailed list of healing foods for your body. Find natural food choices to heal digestive problems, skin disorders, inflammation, heart disease, aging, brain function and more.
*What to Toss. You'll find a list of foods to toss from your cupboards. Out of sight, out of mind!
*150 Recipes. This is the most valuable aspect of the book. Previously I purchased a book that claimed to be a "JJ Virgin Cookbook" by another another author, and was hugely disappointed by the deceptive title! I discovered the knock-off cookbooks were flawed and included ingredients not permitted in the eating program. If you want accurate recipes for the program, use this book written by JJ Virgin.
*Restaurant Guide For Travel and Dining Out. Find general travel strategies for how to maintain healthy eating when you are away from home. Included is a list of "best choice" and "worst choice" options for dining out.
* Meal Plans. While the original JJ Diet book does not include meal plans, her cookbook does! You'll find some great plans for Fast Weight Loss (chapter 13), Vegan and Vegetarian (chapter 14), Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes (chapter 15), Paleo/Low Carb (chapter 16), Family (chapter 17), On the Go (chapter 18) and On a Budget (chapter 19).
