It's a nice looking book, lots of color photos, and for most barbers, lots of unimportant information.
This book needs to teach the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, which has been in effect since 1992.
Instead, it has brilliant color photos of barbers performing straight razor shaves without any basic safeguards against blood-borne diseases like Hepatitis, HIV, staph, syphillus, etc.
Employers who hire people to do shaves, but don't comply with the OSHA standard, will likely be held responsible for any bloodborne disease they acquire while on the job.
The rules are not difficult . . . Basically, all employees get an annual training session in the OSHA bloodborne standard. Here in Texas, course material is available for free from the Texas Dept. of Insurance. Lots of other places, too (look on Youtube).
Also, employees must be provided with PPE (personal protective equipment). For barbers doing shaves, this would mean disposable plastic gloves.
And, all blood-contaminated sharps must be disposed of in a "sharps container" after one use. Then, when the sharps container is full, it must be disposed of according to state law.
Also, since about 2% of the US population has hepatitis B or C, any employee who's job responsibility brings them into contact with blood, the employer must provide the employee with a hepatitis B vaccination.
This has been Federal Law since 1992, and to my knowledge, the only profession that does not comply is the Barber profession.
IMHO, this is scandalous.
Why this topic hasn't occupied a prominant place in the course material, I cannot imagine. I am hopeful that later editions of this book will remedy this oversight.
