I must admit, I went into this book expecting to love it and came out mostly disappointed. However, that was most likely because I had very high and very specific expectations. I had heard from many friends that it was the "dark version of Pride and Prejudice" or a story enjoyed by all Jane Austen fans. Since I loved Pride and Prejudice, I was looking forward to reading another book that would engage me in the same way. Unfortunately, that didn't quite happen for me.
I found the writing style to be long-winded and sluggish. However, I recognize that that was mostly my fault for expecting it to be otherwise. I also had a hard time keeping up with the highly advanced vocabulary. If you enjoy the poetic side of language, you will most likely fall in love with Charlotte Bronte's writing style. She is a master of poetic prose. Her description of landscapes and people's physiognomies are incredibly detailed and beautifully worded... if that is your cup of tea. If you are like me, then you will find most of the book to be hard to get through, since such passages take up a huge portion of the 38 chapters.
Not to say that I didn't enjoy the story. On the contrary! I am a sucker for unrequited love, and Jane's love for Mr. Rochester is certainly that. Her personal struggles between giving into her more passionate desires and remaining faithful to her values and morals are also highly relatable for most people. But again, whenever a strong moment presented itself in which one of these plot conflicts was exposed, there was so much description of small details that the moment was lost on me. I was never able to fully connect with the characters to the extent that I would have liked because of this.
