Timmy Failure Mistakes were made was a wonderful debut all ages book by Stephan Pastis, the creator of Pearls Before Swine. This book goes further, with more humor, more fun characters, and more Calvin and Hobbes like insights from our delightful protagonist. Timmy also has new matters to attend to in the form of a competition to find a missing globe with someone conning the competition, a girl with a crush on him and the fact that he might not actually be able to go to his school at all! Timmy teams up with Total, his polar Bear and with his Grandaunt, an eccentric old woman who provides some of the funnier lines in the book, to solve these problems.
The book is extremely well written and as I said, its an all ages book that children and adults can both enjoy for different ( or the same) reasons. The characters are all well placed and nothing pops up that seems to come from nowhere. Indeed the plot comes off as extremely meticulous ( no surprise given that the writing is always the strong point in Pastis's work) and everything fits together like a glove.
The pacing of the story is well done and it moves as a good rate. The length of the book is just right, it doesn't end too soon or outstay its welcome and leaves you wanting another book. Best of all, its very funny, and something that anyone can laugh at. Timmy is like a mix of all the fun kids characters you loved to read when you were young, and bumbling movie detectives from comedies, packaged for a new generation to enjoy. All in all this is a fantastic follow up and well worth reading.
