International in scope, this lushly photographed coffee table-sized book takes readers to Provence, Mexico, Belgium, the Caribbean, California, the American South and so on for a look at the result of high-end, high-design gardens. Examples have been chosen that show what can be done with different types of sites and in different climates. In every example, some attention is given to the way in which the architecture of the property meets and fits into the planted space. Nor is just one style of gardening represented. The book is divided into sections: Classic, Modern, Romantic and Exotic. The reasons for this typology are well-illustrated and become understandable as one reads along. Of particular interest to the general reader is a very fine article on Monet's garden at Giverny: it is shown in wonderful bloom and shows more than the lily pond and arched bridge. The 'Exotic' section shows some fine and striking examples of the type that feature vivid use of colors, furniture, plant forms and even garden sculpture.
This is not much of a book for hands-on gardeners; it is more a garden tour of 'lifestyles of the rich and famous.' Key ingredients among the plantings are identified and those who can afford it are pointed in the direction of some major contemporary garden designers and landscape architects. Drawn from the pages of 'Veranda' magazine, the text runs more along the lines of 'Muffy and Jamison Muchmoney love to spend time away from the world of high finance in this lovely setting, where they often have 100 of their closest friends over for an al fresco luncheon...' In other words, little time is spent telling the reader 'how they did it' or how you can too.
Still, this makes a wonderful and colorful book to peruse on dark and dreary days.
