Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls Description
Following his ground-breaking, critically acclaimed run on Detective Comics, writer Scott Snyder (American Vampire) alongside artist Greg Capullo (Spawn) begins a new era of The Dark Knight as with the relaunch of Batman, as a part of DC Comics—The New 52!
After a series of brutal murders rocks Gotham City, Batman begins to realize that perhaps these crimes go far deeper than appearances suggest. As the Caped Crusader begins to unravel this deadly mystery, he discovers a conspiracy going back to his youth and beyond to the origins of the city he's sworn to protect. Could the Court of Owls, once thought to be nothing more than an urban legend, be behind the crime and corruption? Or is Bruce Wayne losing his grip on sanity and falling prey to the pressures of his war on crime?

It's been ages since I picked up an in-continuity Batman comic. Batman and Detective Comics is what got me into comics as a teenager, but with a few exceptions (Batman: Hush, for example), I stopped following them, preferring the stand-alone titles like Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory. Once DC re-launched all their titles under The New 52 banner, I couldn't resist checking out the new Batman series.
This volume - titled Batman: The Court of Owls - features issues 1-7 of the new Batman series collected in a nice hardcover. It's written by Scott Snyder (American Vampire) and drawn by Greg Capullo (Spawn), and finds Batman working more or less on his own when he encounters a murder victim that suggests that the Court of Owls - a fearsome secret society Batman long considered nothing more than an old wives tale - is very much real and planning assassinations in Gotham. Their next target: Bruce Wayne!
I wasn't familiar with Snyder's work prior to this volume (though I have been meaning to check out American Vampire), but I was immediately drawn into this story. The elements - a secret society, unkillable assassins, Batman's own history, and plenty of psychological torment of a captive Batman - all come together brilliantly in a tale that's as much a horror/thriller story as it is a superhero adventure.
