I loved this book for the broad range of topics it covered. Making clothes from animals, trees, and various plants, shelter building, fire building, tracking, hunting, navigation........... The list goes on. I imagine back in the day(1945) it was unmatched by anything around it. But in today's times it simply doesn't stand up to the information that is available. A dummies guide to navigation is better than what is in this book. YouTube videos illustrating the very best ways to make friction fires, 20 different ways to make kindling, there is simply way better out there.
Looking at the reviews I'm gonna guess that this review will get lots of negative feed back, but I'm not stating an opinion, I'm stating a fact. If you read this book and went out into the wild to survive for a short time, then you would probably be okay, but I'm telling you that if you spent the time to read current books on the same topic, then your knowledge base would render this book useless. One book really never truly does it all, and this book is no exception.
I enjoyed this book for it's classic value. But the author is only average(not a joy to read), the information is dated, and what information is given on any given topic is very small. I think the only topic that was done any justice was canoeing, lol. You cannot use the plant information, better look up every plant they mentioned online to see photos. I'll stop short and say that every topic should just be re-researched as the information that you can get is just way better elsewhere.
I do recommend you read this book though. If you are a part of the bush craft community, then you really should read it. A lot of people reference this book and you might be lost as to how they got there information.
