I'm a full-time test-prep tutor, and I've studied at least 12 real ACT tests with students of mine. This book is a good overall guide to the ACT. However, students who want to be really high scorers (above 90th percentile) will need more. If I could give this 3.5 stars, I would.
Helpful things:
- solid global strategies for things like time management
- most strategies for specific parts of the test work
- it's user-friendly (what use is a book if students can't or won't read it?)
- the book's test questions are a decent representation of the real test
Unhelpful things:
- there is oversimplification of certain concepts, which sometimes obscures the rigor needed for mastery
- the book says the ACT "merely tests your ability to take the ACT". This is pandering to people who don't like standardized tests, AND it's a dangerous misconception. If you don't believe the ACT tests a whole range of foundational abilities in things like reading ability, critical reasoning, math, etc., then you're probably less inclined to work on those skills - and you should be.
- the statement that "every other part of your application counts more than your test scores? More pandering - and again, if you believe that one, you might not work on the ACT as hard as you should.
If you just buy one ACT book, this is a solid choice. Keep in mind, you also need the Real ACT Prep Guide (published by ACT), since it has real ACT tests, which differ significantly from The Princeton Review's tests. Together, these two books will give you a foundation that can then be built upon with more specific instruction.

My son has Asperger's and is brilliant. He's also not a test taker and has to work very, very hard to be successful. His first time with the ACT (no preparation) he scored a decent score, but he's a perfectionist and wanted to do better. He used the 2006 version of this book and increased his score by 20%. BUT, because he's Aspergerish, he followed the book and did everything EXACTLY the way they suggested. Absolutely no variation.
I believe to have it work well, you should do what they suggest. Don't just flip around and look through it (which is what *I* would do).
For the record, I can't stand the ACT/SAT/etc., but if you must take it then this was a good prep, at least back in 2006.
