I have been tutoring the SAT for over 6 years and have read a lot of SAT material along the way. Though this book does have some merit, I wouldn't recommend it for several reasons:
1. The practice tests are not like real SAT's. The differences are subtle but significant, especially in the verbal sections. This is a major downside: students who practice with these tests will find the real SAT different in several ways - most importantly, Kaplan's questions are usually more straightforward than real SAT questions. Please, do not practice with these tests - use College Board written tests only. There are plenty.
2. The techniques presented for verbal questions are oversimplified: "find the main idea", "eliminate wrong answers", "listen for the error". Sure, those methods work - IF you can do them. There are many bright students who need more explicit instruction for how to find main ideas, determine if an answer if definitely wrong, etc.
3. The techniques are demonstrated on Kaplan-written questions. It's easy to make a technique look effective if you write the question it's used on.
4. Several minor things are incorrect - for example, this book makes the case that the SAT tests trigonometry in math and double negatives in grammar. It doesn't. Certain reading passages are way off SAT style - for example, a passage that looks like it was taken from a science textbook about blood.
5. The little bubbles on the side of each page with tips tend to have facile tips. For example, one "perfect score tip" says that "I found that I didn't need to be overly creative to get a good score on the essay. Simply following Kaplan's rough format is enough to get you a good score.". How is that a "perfect score" tip?
Ok, so what did I like about the book?
It seems like you can't apply to any colleges now without taking the SAT first. They all want to know your score! My younger sister took the test and had a really hard time with it. She was so discouraged and worried that she wouldn't be able to get into any good college. So I bought her this book to help her study so that when she takes the test again, she'll do great.
I had hoped this book would help her, but I wasn't sure that this was the best way to go. It was recommended by a family friend and I figured it was cheap so it was worth a try. I'm so glad that we got this. After my sister went through the book, her next test score went up over 200 points! I was beyond impressed.
I had never heard of Kaplan before this so when I bought this book I thought they were just some book company. It turns out they're this business that is also about tutoring students to take post high school exams, like the SAT. They have a lot of different options for how you learn, like normal sit down classes and personal online tutoring. It's really cool and worth checking out if you're willing to invest more money than just buying a book.
Despite the somewhat high costs of their other programs, this guide is cheap enough to be easy on the wallet while still effective in improving your score. It carries the Kaplan name and quality without costing ridiculous amounts.
We used the full length exams to give us a starting point - an idea about what needed to be focused on the most in her studies. Then we used a couple to test progress periodically, and finally, at the end of the book, we had her take the last one. Her scores improved even between those tests as she learned the techniques throughout the book.
Her favorite part was all the tips and tricks they taught you.
