For those that don't know, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 ReMIX was a compilation of Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re: Chain of Memories, and a movie version of 358/2 Days. Chain of Memories is exactly the same game as the PS2 port of the same name released in the US in 2008 in HD. Kingdom Hearts Final Mix is the original Kingdom Hearts (released for PS2 in 2002) with a few extra enemies, revamped synthesis, an extra boss, and more weapons and accessories. The Final Mix version of the game was never released in the outside Japan until this compilation. Keep this in mind while looking through the rest of this review.
--Kingdom Hearts Final Mix--
As I mentioned above, the Final Mix version has some new features but is overall the same game from before. When buying this guide, I was expecting a fair amount of copying and pasting because of this. What I was hoping was that the writers would at least make an effort to update the existing text with the new information.
What's Included/Updated
- Boss strategy for the new secret boss, "The Unknown"
- Synthesis recipe list
- List of new special enemies
What's NOT Included
- Synthesis ingredient list
- Strategies for new special enemies
- Gummi ship missions
- Gummi blueprint list
There could be other items I could add to the lists, but I haven't yet dived into the Trinity list nor the Dalmatian list (both had minor changes in the Final Mix versions). I will update this review when I know for sure on these two items and others.
One major issue for me is the lack of information on the new enemies. These new enemies aren't just normal hack-and-slash kills. Most of them require a strategy to kill or get their special item to drop.
Here's the bottom line. The guide is really pretty. Design and construction wise, it's fantastic. But as far as the actual content, a lot more could have been done to make it better.
I won't go into all the details, since so many other reviews have already spelled it out, but a lot of information that would have been helpful was not elaborated on in this guide. And if you're like me, trying to get all the trophies for all three games, then you'd be disappointed to know that all they have is a trophy list. No "How-to" thing for getting trophies.
And there's no section for the gummi ship missions. At all. And that is arguably the hardest trophy to get in the entire game (getting every blueprint). The fact that the guide gives you no help for one of the most difficult sections in the game is very subpar.
The Re:CoM section is rather vague. Lines like "Go into the next room, fight the Heartless if you like, then continue on" make it seem like they really only focused on KHFM. And every world in Re:CoM only gets a single page, front and back. There are exceptions, like Olympus Colisuem, but the fact that each section is so short shows how little they actually "guide" you through the game. It's more like bulletpoints for you to follow that you really could've figured out on your own.
The only really helpful parts are for the bosses. This guide helped quite a lot for the Re:CoM bosses, offering great suggestions about what kinds of cards or sleights will be most effective for winning. If they had showed more of this kind of helpfulness for the rest of the content, it would have been awesome.
