This magisterial book is clearly meant as a reference manual. The sheer heft of it, unquestionably. But having said that, it can be indispensible to the practising mechanical engineer. It draws together in its pages hundreds of formulas that pertain to your profession.
Take for instance the chapter on machine design. It discusses in part flat plates under uniform pressure. In turn, this is subdivided into the cases of two types of edge support - simply supported and built in edges. So the formula for the necessary plate thickness is given. Now, the book then supplies worked out numerical examples in both metric and US imperial units. Grr! Only the US uses the latter. The British has long since abandoned them for professional work. So while the book does commendably address the US readership, this adds to the bulk of the book. In effect, you will be paying for some nontrivial portion of the book that you will never use.
Another example of a topic covered is ball bearings. Much crucial information here on this important subject. Like the static and dynamic load capacities. Or how ball bearings differ from roller bearings; the former has point contacts, while the latter has a line contact. So a roller bearing can support a heavier load but have more critical alignment needs.
The book does have many drawings that define the geometries under consideration. You can quickly go between these and the corresponding formulas and examples.
The text does not confine itself to the strictly engineering and physics topics. There are chapters about the economics of an engineering project and of management issues. Some readers might wonder if these should have been included in the already weighty text. But these sections cover practical aspects faced by a practising engineer. Especially one who is rising in the ranks to shoulder management responsibilities.

HALL OF FAME TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Besides being a complete review of material for the ME PE exam, this book contains a wealth of information about the testing process itself and provides a great deal of advice about preparing for and actually taking the exam. What reference works to bring to the test, checklists of materials and things to do in preparation, etc. This is all in the Introduction section, and might well be the most valuable part of the book for some.
In terms of the technical content, Amazon's "Look Inside" feature for the book gives you access to a great deal of it, so it should be easy to evaluate whether this is the book you want to have, and whether it's going to be worth the investment.
