Where'd You Go, Bernadette: A Novel Description
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.
To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence - creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE
Author Stewart O'Nan says -- "Bernadette is a crazy quilt of an epistolary novel, utterly contemporary yet pleasingly old-fashioned, and always light and witty." Yeah, exactly what he said --
This book is one you just cannot put down. And when you have to put it down, all you will do is think about it, wondering what will happen next. It's fun, it's zany, it's full of real people characters, it's witty, it's different. It's good -- it's real good.
We meet the small Seattle family consisting of dad Elgin, mom Bernadette, daughter Bee, along with their pet dog Ice Cream. Just reading the names of the characters made me want to jump head first into this book. The entire book is wisely and neatly plotted out through emails, letters, faxes, and other means of correspondence. To sum things up, Bernadette is a former award-winning architect married to a top executive at Microsoft. Bernadette is full of different anxieties -- afraid to leave her home, hates people, hates the city of Seattle, and who prefers to have others do all of her duties for her. She is a bit of an oddity, very out-spoken, a very loving mother, and somewhat of a hermit.
Bernadette has no problem confronting people when problems arise, and with a young teenaged daughter, problems do arise. Not one to fit into the social scene, Bernadette causes some of the problems herself for Bee. Bee is a lovely girl, smart, poised, and fun. Bee does so well in school that it is decided the family will go where Bee has wished and longed to go forever -- to Antarctica. Usually patient with her mom's phobias, Bee insists that Bernadette come to Antarctica with her and her dad, and therein the fun and problems start.
