Having ordered a Surface Pro 128 yesterday, I decided I should look for a how-to book, and naturally gravitated to "Dummies" as I've had good experiences with the publisher. While I haven't purchased this book yet, I did download and read the free sample. The author, on multiple occasions, mentions that all you get with the Surface in way of instruction is a single piece of paper with
Ikea-like directions. Of course, this is mentioned (again, many times) to entice purchase of the book. What he doesn't mention is the freely available, 68 page .pdf file published by Microsoft, entitled Surface_Getting_Started_Guide. Certainly, Rathbone's book goes into more depth, as one would expect from over 300 pages. I downloaded the 1.4Mb pdf in three seconds, and I am now infinitely more familiar with the use of a Surface Pro, and it didn't cost me a cent. Why the need for hyperbole?

Surface comes with 3 instructions. How to turn it on and adjust the volume, and use the stand. (Now this is better than the iPad which has NO instructions - took me five minutes to figure out how to turn it on.) So you need this (or a similar book, there are two others published at least) to figure out how to use Windows 8 unless you are 13 or so, when it is intutive, I suppose. I spent alot of time with the book the first week, including how to solve a "freeze up" which, being Microsoft, it does on occasion, and things you otherwise would never know - it does not turn off absent some obscure moves, it only goes to sleep running down the battery, and is on, as you board the airplane, unless you in another obscure move, switch it to airplane mode, for example.
